Abstract
In 2011, group tasks were proposed to the victims of the big earthquake and tsunami in eastern Japan to recover their jobs and daily life. Hence, the influence of occupational activities in decreasing their depression and stress was studied.
The occupational activities to decrease the stress of disaster victims staying at the temporary dwelling in Watari jo, Miyagi Prefecture, lasted for three years and three months from March 2012. The occupational activities occurred between once to three times a month. Based on interviews with victims, activities comprised of valuable and familiar jobs, such as cultivating seasonal flowers and plants, since most of the victims were farmers who grew strawberries.
The stress levels of participants who participated in occupational activities were periodically evaluated using the K6.
As the group activities consisted of meaningful jobs, the frequency of participation reduced the victim¡¯s stress by recovering their social role and daily life (p<.05).
Victims of disasters definitely benefit from the development and dissemination of role recovery programs based on participation in occupational activities to decrease their depression and stress. Therefore, it is necessary to train experts who understand the personal life, social role, and value of work. Proactive preparation to prevent and resolve disasters is also essential.
